Cattle are part of food production, and in this context calves are used as laboratory animals to study their own species.
When cattle are used as models for humans, researchers primarily use calves. Their size is appropriate, and they can be used in surgery, e.g. transplantations. Calves have also been used for research on dialysis (for kidney disease) and in developing heart-lung machines (used during heart surgery).
