University

Umeå University has a vision to become an internationally and nationally respected university that is also engaged at the regional level.
The university has over 3800 employees and 28 722 students, including postgraduate students. Of the student body, 62% are women. The university was established by parliamentary decision in 1963 and opened its doors in 1965. However, a school of dentistry had been in operation since 1956 and a school of medicine since 1957.

The Faculty of Medicineexternal link, opens in new window is one of five faculties at Umeå University (www.umu.seexternal link) and is responsible for 12 undergraduate programmes, research, and postgraduate education in biomedicine and nursing. The faculty has approximately 1040 employees (whereof 286 are teachers/researchers with PhDs), about 3000 fulltime undergraduate students, and 450 in postgraduate programmes (whereof over 150 are employed as doctoral students). The faculty includes 13 departments and two research-oriented centres.

Umeå University has chosen to invest in 12 research environments or “Areas of Excellence", of which the following fully or partly engage researchers at the Faculty of Medicine: Population Studies -Ageing and Living Conditions, Biological Chemistry, Cancer Research, Gender Studies, Infections, Nervous System, Social Welfare Research, and Metabolic Diseases.
 
On April 1, 2009, the different animal facilities at the university were coordinated into one unit at the Faculty of Medicine. The unit director is assisted by an advisory board with representatives from veterinarians, animal care personnel and representatives elected by researchers conducting animal research.
