Karolinska Institutet

Karolinska Institutet, the only university in Sweden dedicated exclusively to medicine, is Sweden´s largest centre of medical education and research.

The university was founded in 1810 and currently has around 4000 employees and nearly 6000 full time students. Karolinska Institutet has 16 undergraduate programmes and provides education for dentists, physiotherapists, physicians, speech therapists, biomedical technicians, and other professionals. Around 45% of all medical research conducted at universities and colleges in Sweden takes place at Karolinska Institutet.
 
The Nobel Prize laureates in Physiology or Medicine are selected by the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet. The Assembly is comprised of 50 professors from Karolinska Institutet.

A laboratory animal advisory committee handles questions concerning the use of laboratory animals at Karolinska Institutet. Its work includes promoting the welfare of animals and assuring the quality of projects that involve laboratory animals.
