Mission statement for djurförsök.info - about animal research in Sweden

Welcome to djurförsök.info – a joint website of the universities in Lund, Göteborg, Linköping, Uppsala, and Umeå and the Karolinska Institutet, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, and the Swedish Research Council.
Vaccines, pain medication, insulin for diabetics, and possibilities to transplant organs and treat childhood cancer, asthma, and high blood pressure. All these medical advances have been possible thanks to research involving animals. The benefit of using animal studies in medical research is a good starting point for discussing animal research.

Djurförsök.info puts animal research into context and explains when and why animal studies are needed.

In this way, we aim to provide a multifaceted description of how animal studies contribute to medical research and society at large.

The website aims to:

  • Provide relevant and factual information on research involving animals
  • Communicate the benefits of animal research
  • Raise ethical questions
  • Describe our efforts to develop other research methods
  • Show how we provide for the laboratory animals needs
  • Stimulate discussion

Animal research is an important issue for medical research today and in the future. Experiments on animals are necessary to conduct research that promotes human and animal health. Currently, no alternative methods can fully replace animals in research. Experiments on living animals are not always necessary. Some steps in research can yield usable results through computer models, cell cultures, and other means. But animal experiments will continue to be an important component in research if we are to find solutions to health problems like cancer, cardiovascular diseases, dementia, AIDS, multiple sclerosis, and malaria.

Animal experiments are strictly controlled and permitted only after ethical review, and only in situations where other options are not available. We fully support this standpoint.

Djurförsök.info does not address other animal-related issues such as hunting or animal transport in agriculture.
